{"id":707,"date":"2012-08-03T14:47:31","date_gmt":"2012-08-03T21:47:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/whoismohamed.com\/?p=707"},"modified":"2012-08-03T14:48:06","modified_gmt":"2012-08-03T21:48:06","slug":"taraweeh-prayers-in-ramadan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.whoismohamed.com\/?p=707","title":{"rendered":"Taraweeh Prayers in Ramadan Special prayers are said each evening of the holy month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When the month of Ramadan begins, Muslims enter into a period of discipline and worship: \u00a0fasting during the day, and praying throughout the day and night. \u00a0During Ramadan, special evening prayers are conducted during which long portions of the Qur&#8217;an are recited. \u00a0These special prayers are known as taraweeh.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_708\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/whoismohamed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/determnight002-27.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-708\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-708   \" title=\"Taraweh\" src=\"http:\/\/whoismohamed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/determnight002-27.jpg\" alt=\"Taraweh\" width=\"230\" height=\"157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.whoismohamed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/determnight002-27.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.whoismohamed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/determnight002-27-300x203.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-708\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Taraweh<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The word taraweeh comes from an Arabic word which means to rest and relax. \u00a0The prayer can be very long (well over an hour), during which one stands upright to read from the Qur&#8217;an and performs many cycles of movement (standing, bowing, prostrating, sitting). \u00a0After each four cycles, one sits for a brief period of rest before continuing &#8212; this is where the name taraweeh (&#8220;rest prayer&#8221;) comes from.<br \/>\nDuring the standing portions of the prayer, long sections of the Qur&#8217;an are read. \u00a0The Qur&#8217;an is divided into equal parts (called juz) for the purpose of reading sections of equal length during each of the Ramadan nights. \u00a0Thus, 1\/30 of the Qur&#8217;an is read on successive evenings, so that by the end of the month the entire Qur&#8217;an has been completed.<br \/>\nIt is recommended that Muslims attend the taraweeh prayers in the mosque (after &#8216;isha, the last evening prayer), to pray in congregation. \u00a0This is true for both men and women. \u00a0However, one may also perform the prayers individually at home. It is without dispute, however, that when praying the taraweeh prayer in congregation, one should start and end with the imam, according to the number that he performs. Night prayers in Ramadan are a blessing, and one should not argue about this fine point.
